Language requests: Page names and archiving

[edit]

May I suggest that this page be moved to "Language Domains Requests", and that the current "requests" page (which I started) be made an archive of it? (Some people have even continued to edit the old requests page during the new vote, which means that some do find it confusing.)

Furthermore, the old "language domains proposal" could be moved to an archive of the current vote, and the link removed from Sriptorium.

If no one has any objections the moves can be made (I won't be able to get back online for this for a while though, so someone else can do it if they want in the meantime). Dovi 09:02, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

sure, go ahead. don't forget to update all the links. ThomasV 09:07, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I don't understand. Wouldn't a link like wikisource:fr:French Text be sufficient? Ambush Commander 19:59, 10 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

No, that sort of link which should work, doesn't actually work on at least some of the sister projects. w:fr may give you an "fr" title in English wikipedia; "en" or "fr" will give you English or French Wikipedias, with no way to link to the other projects except externally (with single square brackets). Dovi 20:43, 10 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Wait... do you mean link redundancy, as in w:en:Wikipedia (invalid) w:Wikipedia (valid, but may not always go to en?) I'm not sure I exactly understand, can you give some examples? Ambush Commander 21:03, 10 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Nope, not just redundancies. Check it out in some languages to see. Dovi 07:27, 11 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

(Moved discussion below from article. Let's change the article when we have all the info and a decision.)

Propose s-xx: where xx is the language code ex) s-en:The Economic Consequences of the Peace. What is the precedent for other hard links? Ambush Commander
Slightly different alternative (not that this makes a great deal of difference, but let's make these codes as short and simple as possible, even avoiding punctuation): The only problem with "hewikisource" as a model is the length. Shorten "wikisource" to "s" and you get hes:nameofarticle. However, if the normal system of links would work properly from all projects, you could just use s:en: or s:he:.
why can't we? ThomasV 17:24, 17 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

The developer who sets up the wiki has to make sure that it will work, and that person is the only one who can answer the question. So I guess we should ask...

Currently this works on some projects, not on others. In some, ":w:fr:" will give you the "fr" article on English wikipedia... :-)

In some, "w" always gives the English Wikipedia, no matter what language the wiki is. hewikisource: has this problem too.

Hopefully, the developer who sets up our wikis will be able to set it up for codes like ":s:fr:", etc. And will also be able to direct plain ":s:" to wikisource.org. But even if it is done this way, extra "hard" links could be a failsafe mechanism. If they turn out to be superfluous that is a good thing.

We should try to get some developer input on this, and then summarize our conclusions in the article.

Also, ThomasV, if you don't mind please do me a small favor: Since you are talking to developers, etc., on RC (which I don't know how to use), could you remind them when they get a chance to deal with things also to correct the links and the project namespace at hewikisource:? (The info for fixing these things is on this Language domain requests page.) Dovi 18:28, 17 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

I'll try, but irc is a medium where things get easily forgotten... btw, irc is very easy: type "mozilla --chat" and click on 'freenode'. once connected, type '/join wikimedia' and you're there ThomasV 18:57, 17 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Moving pages to language domains

[edit]

Discussion has been moved to:

[edit]

Can someone please explain how to get a link from Wikipedia to a page on wikisource.org? At the moment, none of the Wikisource links on Wikipedia work anymore, because they all try to go to pages on en.wikisource.org instead! This is causing no end of confusion over there, with people removing "broken" links that really aren't. So: How do you link to a page like Xor swap algorithm from the English Wikipedia? Is it different if you want to link from the French Wikipedia? --Quuxplusone 17:32, 20 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

If it's on the multilingual wikisource, using something like [[s:Xor swap algorithm]] won't work, because the link will go to the English Wikisource. Instead, people will just have to make it a link, link [http://wikisource.org/wiki/Xor_swap_algorithm]. It's confusing, but maybe we could propose a bug so that any language of Wikipedia (or any other project, for that matter), could link to the multilingual WS without any problem.| 17:50, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
I'd definitely file a bug, if I knew how. The external-link solution is fine for "raw" Wikisource links, but the English Wikipedia uses standardized templates of the form {{wikisourcepar|Page title at Wikisource}}, and I don't think there's any way to convert that into [http://wikisource.org/wiki/Page_title_at_Wikisource] automatically. (Notice that all the spaces need to be replaced with underscores.) So at the moment the English Wikipedia's {{wikisourcepar}} template is broken. --Quuxplusone 03:33, 22 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
What if the {{wikisourcepar}} URL were changed to [http://wikisource.org/wiki/{{{1}}}]? Where {{{1}}} is a parameter of the template?| 03:40, 22 September 2005 (UTC)
I wonder a bit if I understand the problem. There is no difficulty to link from cs:wikipedia to Wikisource.org, we use the syntax oldwikisource: and it gets OK. -jkb- 11:33, 30 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Languages on this page that are ready

[edit]

What do we do, now that the initial "wave" of language-creations is over, when languages on this page have sufficient interest to start a wiki? Until people at Meta know, these languages will not be created.

I suggest that languages with enough interest be listed here:

Maybe before languages are listed there they should be marked "approved" or something here by a buraeucrat. Dovi 09:24, 27 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I request some information from the "government" about these new subdomain language request ? When it will be created ? Borgx 14:34, 5 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

The "government" (i.e. the people who decide to create domains) is at Meta. We need to find a way for the people there to become aware of the language that are ready here. I suggest you start contacting the people there and maybe on the Wikimedia mailing list to find a solution to the problem. I also highly suggest you contact en:User:Angela who is always very helpful, and able to help in this area.Dovi 17:24, 5 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

I added sk and sl to the list on meta. I suggest someone makes a grouped request to developers. maybe we should wait until we have created lists of the pages to be moved to each subdomain. ThomasV 10:46, 16 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Problem with images not being moved

[edit]

I've just spent several hours repairing Advanced Automation for Space Missions and thought there might be other works out there that also got damaged like it was. The images for this text weren't moved along with it and a number were subsequently deleted as "unused" after the text linking to them was removed. Fortunately I had them all archived locally and I've reuploaded most to en (will be finishing the rest soon), but there could be other documents with images where the original uploaders have moved on and haven't noticed what happened. Bryan Derksen 08:49, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I've started that arduous process. I'm not sure exactly how many works had images, but I've fixed a number that were broken. As far as I can tell, it's pretty much just Sherlock Holmes plates, and maybe a few pictures here and there.| 15:26, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Wikisource Malay

[edit]

Hi. I am wondering why there is no page for the Malay language Wikisource? I've written the ms domain but it diverts to the global Wikisource main page. Is it still have no domain for Wikisource in Malay.. as I would like to contribute in it? What I found was a Malay language article but in a global Wikisource web categorized as Malay language. Need ASAP response.CyberTroopers (talk) 08:07, 30 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

There is no stand-alone wiki for a Wikisource in the Malay language. Currently, as you point out, ms.wikisource.org redirects to the multilingual Wikisource. Searching for "ms" there leads to s:mul:Main Page/Bahasa Melayu, which is the Main Page for "the Malay Wikisource". There is already a (very old) request for a (separate) Malay Wikisource at m:Requests for new languages/Wikisource Malay. Perhaps you could ask there what needs to be done to qualify for a separate wiki. - dcljr (talk) 09:06, 30 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
