Te Karere O Nui Tireni

This page is still in its trial stage. It is in the Māori language, but I have placed it here because no Māori Wikisource exists, and I have not yet sorted how to create a wikisource in a language not on the existing list.

The text is that of a Māori newspaper (Jauary 1, 1842) called Te Karere O Nui Tireni, (The New Zealand Messenger), which is in the public domain. It is taken from a scanned version online produced by the University of Waikato, and I am in the process of correcting this from a photograph of the original page on the same website.

This is intended in part as a service to Waikato University's Niupepa Project. The document is in the public domain, though questions of tikanga and intellectual property rights may remain. In the meantime I wish to have this uploaded so that I can have it checked out by Mr. Te Taka Keegan, the Niupepa Project Manager.

In the meantime, if anyone finding this page can help me in creating a Māori Wikisource, I shall be very grateful.

The text follows. It is in a very raw state at the moment. Most of the punctuation is not in the transcription, but is copied manually from the photograph. The # signs mark places where there are differences in the words between the original, the transcription and this edited version. These will be replaced eventually by footnotes.
